Wedding budget breakdown by percentage
Splitting by percentage is the simplest way to start, because it works for any total. Here's the starting split this calculator uses. It's a common rule of thumb, not a rule, so change any share to fit what matters to you.
| Category | Share | On $30,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Venue & catering | 45% | $13,500 |
| Photography & video | 12% | $3,600 |
| Attire & beauty | 9% | $2,700 |
| Flowers & decor | 9% | $2,700 |
| Music & entertainment | 8% | $2,400 |
| Rings | 3% | $900 |
| Invitations & stationery | 2% | $600 |
| Transportation | 2% | $600 |
| Favors & gifts | 2% | $600 |
| Officiant & license | 2% | $600 |
| Cushion for surprises | 6% | $1,800 |
Why venue and catering take the biggest share
They're usually priced per guest, so they grow with every name on the list. That's also why the guest count changes your budget more than anything else.
Why keep a cushion?
Fees, tips, alterations and last-minute extras turn up in almost every wedding. Setting aside a share up front means they don't come out of something you care about.
What “cost per guest” tells you
It's your total budget divided by your guests. With $30,000 and 120 guests, that's $250 per guest. It's handy for comparing venues and caterers that quote per person: if venue and catering are 45% of $30,000, that's $13,500, or $112.50 per guest to spend there.
How to use the split
Enter your total and guest count above, then adjust the shares as quotes come in. If the venue quote is higher than its share, take a little from categories that matter less to you, so the total still adds up to 100%. Use “Use the typical split” any time to start over.
Ways to lower the cost per guest
- Trim the guest list first. It changes almost every other cost.
- Look at Friday, Sunday or off-season dates for venue savings.
- Choose in-season flowers and let the venue do some of the decorating.
